Locomotive Works NewsLBSCR Billinton "E4" Class No 473 "Birch Grove"Valve and cylinder repairs, and repainting as BR No 32473
8 February 2005The front end repairs have been completed, with new piston rings fitted.
New paintwork nearly finished.
2 January 2005Birch Grove is in the works for attention to its front end. It returned to traffic in 1998 with rather worn valves dating back to British Railways days. In August 2002 they were replaced, but as keen observers will have noted by the squealing sound it makes when starting away, the new valves appear not to have bedded in properly. A subsequent look at the valves showed no apparent problem, so a new look at them and at the pistons and rings is taking place. Whilst in the works the locomotive will be repainted.
The valve and piston covers removed,
but with the valves and pistons still in place.
The umber brown paintwork partly rubbed down. The paintwork was good enough for several more years service, but the society trustees had agreed to a request to repaint it just to make a change. It will re-appear in 1950s style as British Railways No 32473.
(Although it doesn't look it, the ladder was properly secured.)
