Tool Van No. 92

This vehicle is no longer at the Bluebell Railway

GWR Tool Van 92 under repair at Kingscote - Richard Salmon

GWR 92 - Tool Van (built in 1922)
Richard Salmon

Most tool vans were converted from old railway carriages but this type was constructed new at Swindon, albeit on the underframe of an older 4-wheeled carriage. The unbusual skylights were a feature included to make up for the lack of windows, the interior being fitted out with racks and shelves.

Arriving on the Bluebell Railway on 20 March 1979, it was used initially as the tool van for our steam crane. In 1997 it moved to Kingscote, and the tool van is seen in the photo above whilst undergoing repairs to its sky-lights there.

GWR Tool Van 92 leaves the Bluebell - Ashley Smith - 17 January 2009

It left the Bluebell on 17 January 2009 after it had been deemed surplus to the Bluebell collecation after the review of the wagon fleet undertaken the previous year, since this type of vehicle would not have been found off the GW's lines. Ashley Smith's photo above shows it as it left Sheffield Park for transfer to the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway.

You can see its current status on its Railway Heritage Register entry.
