Paid Employment:

The Railway has the following Catering Vacancies:

Front of house Team Leader

To assist the Front of House Supervisors in overseeing the daily running of the Bluebell Railway's catering outlets. To work as part of a team, leading other staff and contributing in the provision of quality service in line with Bluebell procedures and standards.

Must have a good understanding of food hygiene requirements and the laws applicable to the sale and provision of alcohol.

Applicants should be self-motivated, enthusiastic, a strong team player. The role will require flexible mid-week and weekend working 40hrs per week.

Applicants must have their own transport.

Kitchen Porter

The post will entail working in a busy kitchen to assist the Chefs in food preparation and undertake basic kitchen duties to maintain hygiene standards and assist in the efficient operation of the kitchen.

Volunteer Positions:

The railway is looking for a
Volunteer Data Protection Officer

The successful applicant will primarily work to ensure all areas of the Railway comply and proactively demonstrate there are efforts in place to prevent non-compliance with the General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR) coming into force in May 2018.

This position requires a minimum commitment of three days (24 hrs) per week. Applicants should be self-motivated, enthusiastic, and have some previous experience of working in a data protection compliance environment.

Volunteer to support our Finance and Administration Department

The successful applicant will primarily work with the Finance Manager at Sheffield Park Station. Duties will also include assisting in general administration. This position requires the minimum commitment of two days (16hrs) a week. Knowledge of Sage accounts and Excel would be beneficial as would any other financial experience.

Applicants should be self-motivated, enthusiastic, and be quick to adapt to various tasks within a busy office environment.

Volunteer to support our Social Media activity

As the Bluebell Railway gears up for its 60th Anniversary celebrations over the next 3 years, starting with the commemoration of the closure of the British Railway operations in March 2018, it is looking for a volunteer to support the Commercial department in its Social Media activity around the planned events. The successful applicant will work closely with the Commercial team and the Delivery Group for the Diamond Jubilee to ensure all PR opportunities are exploited on Facebook, Twitter and other social media channels.

The applicant must demonstrate excellent communication skills, a flair for creative copy-writing and a proven track record of using a range of social media channels.

Volunteer Opportunities:

With trains running on three-quarters of the days of the year, recruitment of new volunteers in all departments is an ongoing project, and there are details here of how you could help us as a volunteer.

Our Locomotive Works is looking for volunteers

The locomotive workshop is open 7 days per week, and is seeking skilled engineers and machinists to join the team to carry out the maintenance, overhaul and repair of the railway's historic collection of steam locomotives.

Volunteers must have either completed an engineering apprenticeship or have other equivalent qualifications. Skills essential for this post include machining and fitting mechanical parts with demonstrable competence in the use of manual operated lathes and milling machines.

In addition the Locomotive Works also require non-skilled personnel for general duties, who are just as important to the department.

The education department of the Bluebell Railway is expanding and needs you!
As an Education Volunteer you might...

  • Guide school parties around our exhibits.
  • Facilitate outdoor education.
  • Escort school parties on the steam trains.

  • Dress up and role play in our 'WW2 evacuation' experience.
  • Gain experience and build an attractive C.V.
We are looking for people with an interest in Heritage Learning. If you like working with people of all ages, are a good communicator, want to learn new skills and share some of your own, then this could be the volunteering opportunity for you.

The Commercial Department is looking for volunteer help

We are seeking a volunteer Sales and Information office assistant, to work in either our East Grinstead or Sheffield Park office, to assist visitors and sell and book our products at the Bluebell Railway, including our dining trains and travel services. Previous customer service experience is desirable and you must be computer literate. Previous applicants need not apply.
