

The role of Works Manager is to plan and manage the maintenance, repair and overhaul of carriages and wagons, and to ensure the works is operated in a safe and efficient manner, complying with all relevant legislation. Critically important is the need to maintain accurate and comprehensive records of all activity.
The manager is required to organise the work of the paid and volunteer staff so that the railway's commercial needs are met by availability of the appropriate rolling stock, and so that volunteer groups are able to undertake overhauls of a variety of vehicles to meet the preservation society's policies. The manager is responsible for the training and assessment of paid and volunteer staff, the setting up of an apprenticeship scheme, and provision of advice and planning to the board of directors.
The post holder will have a relevant engineering qualification, and experience in the repair and maintenance of railway rolling stock. The ability to manage work and staff, and to provide instruction for others, is essential Applicants must have a proven track record of management in a multi-discipline environment with a strong pro-active approach to problem solving and team building, and must be able to demonstrate commitment to meeting targets and on-time delivery of projects using innovative solutions.
The Carriage and Wagon Works operates 7 days per week, and some weekend working may be required.
