About the Cash for Cover Appeal

The Bluebell Railway is justifiably renowned for its fantastic collection of vintage carriages. We still have over 20 pre-nationalisation carriages stored in the open - to conserve them for the future it is vital to get them under cover as soon as possible.

The Cash For Cover Appeal has already raised money to make a substantial start on the Horsted Keynes Carriage Shed Extension, by constructing the shell and roof of the building. The overall project is known as Operation Undercover Phase 4.

We are now looking to raise more money, to complete the walls and doors, and most importantly, the Heritage Skills Centre, a two-storey range of rooms on the Eastern side of the shed, including a class-room/meeting room, a training workshop, trim shop and varnish shop, in addition to a small office and records store. So there is still more to be raised to complete the project; please continue to give generously!

Proposed shed - with roof only - Matthew Cousins We now have the supports and the roof over four storage roads and the current maintenance road, and will soon also have the structure and roof up for the Heritage Skills Centre. You can see here an artist's impression (thanks to Matthew Cousins) of how it will look; the building to the left is the existing Carriage Works.

This will cover more than 20 carriages, meaning that virtually all of the pre-nationalisation coaches on the Bluebell can be placed under cover.

That will not complete the project, of course, since we also need to raise the funds to build a separate component store but we have made a tremendous start, thanks to many generous donors. The drawing below, also by Matthew Cousins, shows how the finished shed, for which we have already secured full planning permission, will look.

Proposed shed - complete - Matthew Cousins There is still a long way to go to reach our full target. Any donation, small or large, will be very welcome. The Keep up the Pressure campaign is helping to restore our locomotives. This appeal will conserve the carriages for our locomotives to haul, and in which our passengers will travel.

If you are able to support this campaign, since JustGiving deduct a percentage administration charge, for larger amounts sending a cheque is preferred. All options for sending donations are on the CforC Donations page. Thank you in advance for your support.

So please help us get our carriages under cover, and donate now.
