November 2002
On the Saturday evening of the October 2002 Giants of Steam event, Nos.80151 and 473 sit on shed at Sheffield Park. The LBSCR E4 was built at Brighton works in 1898, while the BR Standard 4 was also built at Brighton but over half a century later in 1956. Late night running was a feature of the gala, with Nos.92240 and 21C123 both being employed on service trains at the time this picture was taken. Exposure details: ISO 400 at F11 for 13 seconds.

On the afternoon of Sunday 1st September 2002 9F No.92240 bursts out of the 731 yard Sharpthorne Tunnel with a train for Kingscote. Please note that the section of line immediately north of the tunnel is not included in the lineside permit area - this shot was taken while on p-way work.

A West Country Class Locomotive for the West Country Weekend. Complete with 'Atlantic Coast Express' headboard, Bulleid Light Pacific No.21C123 'Blackmoor Vale' climbs Freshfield Bank on Saturday the 27th July 2002. Compare this shot taken on a scorching summers day with the January picture of the month below in the same location but with quite the opposite conditions !

July 2002
Going back a couple of years to the 2000 Summer Gala sees 1902 built SECR C Class No.592 at West Hoathly, with the 9.50 ex. Horsted Keynes. The date is Saturday 5th August 2000. This magnificent loco is currently out of traffic in her Centenary year, but hopefully the use of a spare boiler will see her back in action before very long.

June 2002
On Sunday 2nd June 2002, BR Standard 4 No.80151 is seen near Ingwersons with the second Golden Arrow working of the day. The train also comprised the Vintage Branchline Set, yet the load didn't seem to post too much of a problem for the '4' as she climbed the 1 in 125 at this spot.

May 2002
BR Standard 5MT No.73082 'Camelot' runs across New Road Bridge and into Horsted Keynes with the 11.00am from Sheffield Park on Sunday 21st April 2002. The 73082 Camelot Locomotive Society were holding their AGM in the GNR Directors Saloon immediately behind the locomotive. Although only a Service 2 timetable was in operation, 5 locomotives were in steam - No.672 on Footplate Days and Ways training runs at Horsted Keynes, No.80151 on the Golden Arrow lunch train, No.73082 on one service train, and Nos.473 and 65 double-heading a six coach vintage branchline set.

April 2002
The Easter Period of 2002 saw four days of quite intensive running, including Stepney Specials fitted in to the hourly service. The popularity of the latter meant that SER 0-6-0 No.65 was required to double-head with Stepney, and the pairing are seen here running past Three Arch Bridge on the approach to Horsted Keynes. The train is the 4.31 from Sheffield Park on Good Friday, 29th March 2002.

March 2002
One locomotive that has so far failed to appear in my Picture of the Month section is one of the Bluebell's most regular performers, BR 4MT No.75027. This picture depicts the 1952 built 4-6-0 climbing past Holywell during the October 2001 Giants of Steam, having just crossed Keysford Lane. The train is the 12.50pm from Sheffield Park, formed of the vintage branchline set and LNWR observation car, while the date is Saturday 27th October.

February 2002
The last few days of 2001 saw an intensive timetable of vintage trains in operation. On the penultimate day of the year, LBSCR E4 No.473 'Birch Grove' is opened up after receiving the token for the single line from Kingscote to Horsted Keynes. The 1898 built 0-6-2T was in charge of one vintage set, the other being worked by the Bluebell's two LBSCR Terriers, Nos. 55 of 1875, and 672 of 1872.

January 2002
9F No.92240 makes a fine sight climbing the 1 in 75 gradient of Freshfield Bank with the 12.35 departure from Sheffield Park on Boxing Day 2001. It was quite a sight seeing the locomotive coming round the curve at Ketches, over half a mile away, and then attacking the bank, sending plumes of steam into the cold December air. Anyway, it certainly made up for missing a cold turkey lunch !!
