Underframe of Van C No.404

This stove fitted Southern Railway Van C (BY) retains most of its original features. It saw several years service as the brake vehicle on the Bluebell Railway's Southern-liveried vintage set, was cosmetically overhauled and adapted as a generator van for filming work, and is now used as the generator van for the "SteamLights" services in the winter.

In 2022 the planking and floor at the southern end was renewed, and that at the northern end was done in 2026, which included substantial repairs to the top flanges of the underframe structure.

These photos were taken on 29 August 2026, during the period when the work described above was taking place. They are a complete set of photos, going round the vehicle from one corner.

They are available to download as a single ZIP archive file here.
The Bluebell additions are marked with a white cross. These are:

• Non-slip tread on step boards;
• Modern charging points for the batteries (replacing the original RCH charging connectors);
• The grey box on the end of the battery box, containing lighting relays for the through lighting control which the vehicle didn't originally have;
• The RCH connectors (again for through lighting control) on the vehicle ends.
