Southern Railway Van C (BY) No. 442
4-wheeled guards' brake van built in 1937
This vehicle now exists only as an underframe.
Van C No. 442, as painted in malachite, as a generator van, April 2003. Richard Salmon
This 4-wheeled guards brake van built in 1937, and know in later days as a "BY", and after initial use as a guards' department dormitory and mess room, was used at one time as a passenger brake van on the Bluebell. It was however substantially modified when fitted with a diesel generator, to operate with the ill-fated "hotel" which was to have been attached to the Golden Arrow. It's possibly at this time that it lost the periscope (guard's lookout) on the roof. It subsequently deteriorated to the extent that its place in our core collection, alongside No. 404, was taken by No. 419.
In July 2014 its rotting body was removed to provide an underframe for a vintage coach body, initially being used to carry (for storage) 1898-built South Eastern Railway family saloon No. 172. It is interesting to note that the underframe itself is now in sufficiently poor condition, with some main sections seriously corroded, that the vehicle would never have run again without a completely rebuilt underframe in any case.
